For many years, farming was a difficult and uncertain journey for Joseph Mugema of Lugazi Village, Katwe Subcounty in Ssembabule District. Like many smallholder farmers, he worked hard season after season, yet the harvests remained low and unpredictable. Farming on four acres of maize, Joseph harvested only about 3,300 kilograms per season — production that generated limited income and made it difficult to build a stable future for his family.
When Joseph joined Vunza Village Cooperative in 2022, he was searching for ways to improve his farming and household livelihood. Through the cooperative and support from COSMA Sustainable Rural Development, he gained access not only to agricultural inputs but also to knowledge that fundamentally changed how he approached farming.
But Joseph’s transformation extends beyond his own household.
As his confidence and experience grew, he increasingly became an advocate for improved farming practices within his community. Recognizing the value of practical farmer learning, Joseph voluntarily donated approximately half an acre of his land located in Lugazi Village in Katwe Subcounty, for the establishment of a maize demonstration plot by COSMA. The demonstration site now serves as a learning space where farmers can observe and learn improved agricultural practices firsthand.
Combined with his active encouragement of fellow farmers to adopt better farming practices and participate in cooperative activities, Joseph has gradually emerged as a respected community leader and role model.
Reflecting on his journey, Joseph believes more communities should have access to cooperative support systems and climate-smart agriculture interventions to help farmers better cope with climate shocks and improve livelihoods. He has advocated for expansion of such services to other areas, including Mijwaara Subcounty, while also recommending timely delivery of agricultural inputs and additional support such as pesticides to help farmers reduce crop losses.
Today, Joseph’s story demonstrates that agricultural transformation is about more than increasing yields. With the right support systems, farmers can move beyond improving their own livelihoods to becoming local champions who inspire change, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for others.
