COSMA SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT

At COSMA, we recognize the many challenges smallholder farmers face. Our approaches are designed to directly address these issues, offering sustainable solutions that empower farmers and strengthen their communities. By helping farmers grow their businesses, increase household incomes, and contribute to long-term agricultural growth, we are committed to fostering a brighter future for agriculture in Uganda.
Agro-Input Financing
We support farmers with access to high quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides on credit empowering them to plant on time and maximize productivity, even in the absence of immediate capital. All inputs are sourced from certified suppliers to ensure quality, effectiveness, and improved crop yields. This approach helps farmers grow healthier produce and compete more effectively in the market.
Repayments are made post-harvest, with flexible, modest terms, easing the burden of upfront costs and enabling farmers to focus on a successful growing season

Market Linkage

COSMA strengthens market access for smallholder farmers by organizing them into Village Cooperatives, allowing for collective marketing and sales which improves their bargaining power and opens doors to larger markets.
We also provide Farmers with real-time market information via digital platforms like SMS, helping them secure competitive prices for their produce which boosts income, enhances financial stability, and supports sustainable agricultural growth.
Village Loans and Financial Literacy Training
COSMA partners with Village Cooperatives to provide revolving loans to farmers, anchored in each member’s savings. As farmers repay their loans, the funds are redistributed to others creating a sustainable cycle of financial support within the community.
Each cooperative independently sets affordable interest rates, and loans are typically used for vital farming needs such as purchasing tools, expanding land, or acquiring agro inputs.
To promote long term success, COSMA delivers comprehensive financial literacy training, equipping farmers with essential skills in budgeting, saving, loan management, and mitigating agricultural risks.
Farmers also receive hands-on training in climate change adaptation techniques, including water harvesting during rainy seasons for drought resilience, bottle irrigation, and effective pest and disease control strategies.
Complementing this, COSMA offers agricultural extension services that cover modern farming practices, post-harvest handling, farm visits for practical learning, and ongoing technical support ensuring continuous improvement and increased productivity.
