Hasifah’s Story: A Journey of Hope and Empowerment

Hasifah is a determined single mother of seven children, carrying the responsibility of providing for her family on her own. For years, she struggled to make ends meet, facing the daily challenges of farming with limited resources. But Hasifah’s story is one of hope, transformation, and the power of support from Cosma’s Sustainable Rural Development Program.

In 2017, Hasifah joined the Kalububu Farming Cooperative Group, consisting of 47 members, seeking to learn how to save and improve her farming practices. At the time, her knowledge of agriculture was limited, and with minimal funds, she struggled to make her farm profitable. However, she knew that she needed to make a change for the sake of her children and their future.

The Turning Point: Support from Cosma

Her journey took a pivotal turn when she joined Cosma’s Agricultural Program, which provided financial support and crucial training on farming techniques and savings. Through this program, Hasifah and other farmers like her gained the knowledge they needed to enhance their agricultural production.

Before receiving this support, Hasifah's coffee farm yielded only 900kg per acre. However, after borrowing $260 from Cosma to purchase fertilizers, she was able to apply the knowledge and techniques she had learned. The result? In her first harvest season, Hasifah saw a 100% increase in her yields, doubling her harvest and significantly boosting her profits.

The success didn’t stop there. With the profits from her first successful harvest, along with an additional loan of $120, Hasifah made a wise investment. She purchased a dairy cow for $190, diversifying her income through milk sales. This new source of revenue further strengthened her ability to support her family and increase her financial security.

In addition to the dairy cow, Hasifah was able to invest in a rainwater harvesting tank, solving the challenge of fetching water from a distant source. This simple solution saved her valuable time, especially during the dry season, and ensured that she had a consistent water supply for her farm and family.

Today, Hasifah’s life has been transformed. She is not only thriving as a farmer but has also become a leader of her cooperative group. Her journey from struggle to success has empowered not only herself but also those around her. Hasifah’s success story is a shining example of how targeted support and financial assistance can break the cycle of poverty and create lasting change in rural communities.
