COSMA SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT

In Uganda, children in rural communities face significant barriers to education due to poverty, limited resources, and the effects of diseases like HIV/AIDS. Many struggle to afford school fees, uniforms, and basic supplies, which greatly limits their chances for a brighter future. With over 22% of Uganda’s population living in chronic poverty, school dropout rates remain alarmingly high. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Statistical Abstract 2022, school attendance drops from 68% in primary school to just 22% in secondary school, with financial difficulties being the leading cause of discontinuation.
Among girls, early pregnancy is a major factor contributing to school dropouts, accounting for approximately 35% of cases. A study by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Uganda found that 22% of girls left school due to pregnancy, with a higher incidence in rural areas (24%) compared to urban areas (17%).
Addressing these challenges through sponsorship and community support is crucial to ensuring that every child, especially girls, has access to quality education and the opportunity for a brighter future. A sponsorship program bridges this gap by providing children with access to education, healthcare, and essential needs. Beyond academics, sponsorship offers hope, stability, mentorship, and empowerment, allowing children to thrive and break the cycle of poverty.
By investing in a child’s education, sponsors change lives not only for the individual child but for entire families and communities. A well-educated child grows into a self-sufficient adult who can contribute to local development and uplift others.
